Hobbies

What I love about teaching is seeing a student experience the "Aha!" moment, when the mastery of many disparate facts and concepts comes together to form a clear understanding of the big picture. I recently co-authored a book for parents about supporting children during their K - 12 education, and now have a thorough understanding of different learning styles and study methods. I am well-versed in the current structure of our educational system and its best practices, and can help students and parents navigate the school and classroom. I can assist in rooting out the causes of snags in a child's progress and in setting a child back on track. I encourage good study skills and habits using patience, a big bag of strategic tricks and an empathetic, positive attitude. As a writer in many genres, I can help students of all ages with reading challenges in both decoding and comprehension. I can also guide them in writing prose, poetry, scripts and non-fiction. One of my majors as an undergrad at Brandeis University was English and American Lit, and I garnered high honors for my writing track thesis. I can help young students rise to level 3 and 4 Depth of Knowledge thinking around their reading, and teach older students to think critically and write elegantly. The second of my two majors as an undergrad was Theater Arts. I worked as an actor and director for several years, and have also coached actors of different ages over the years. I earned my graduate degree in Film Directing at Columbia University, and while learning to a direct I discovered that my background in acting gave me a richer language with which to communicate to actors. I also studied with the incomparable Michael Howard for several years, and learned much about coaching actors at his feet. I have a knack for helping child actors connect to their material, and love way young actors are so easily fully present in performance. I am the co-author of a textbook about acting Shakespeare, and specialize in all aspects of analyzing, writing about, and performing his work. It's very exciting to see students connect with Shakespeare's language and ideas, and coaching young actors in his scenes and monologues is a privilege. I encourage parents and students to schedule a first meeting. I am happy to either jump right in to the work to be done, or, in more complex situations, to sit with the family and discuss the student's needs from the point of view of both parents and child, and then chart a course that is workable for the whole family.
