Education

MA in Cinema Studies from New York University (2013) MSEd in Secondary English Education from Queens College, CUNY (2007). My research focused on the use of drama in the classroom. BA in English and American Literature from New York University (2003). Additionally, I am a member of various professional organizations: National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and Society of Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS). I am currently taking Spanish language courses through Fluent City and a course to begin in July on bell hooks at Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. I am always working towards enriching my own education.

Experience

I have a Professional Teaching Certificate in English from New York State for grades 7-12 and have taught high school English for 11 years. I seek part-time work as a tutor to help supplement my personal expenses. My teaching experience ranges from grades 9 to 12. I have taught general education, ESL, and Special Education students as well as Honors and AP students. My expertise includes remedial reading and writing as well as advanced composition and critical thinking. Some specialized courses I have taught include a College Board approved AP Language and Composition curriculum and Creative Writing. I also teach an Advisory class which focuses on SAT prep, study skills, life skills, and organization. Specific tests that I have helped students prepare for include the Common Core English Regents Exam, AP English Language and Composition, and SAT Verbal. In my years as a teacher, I have published multiple journals of student writing and took students on trips to places such as the New York Public Library, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. I believe that experiential learning is often the most valuable to a student's growth and development. My students' writing has been published online as well as selected for publication with organizations such as Girls Write Now, New Youth Connections, and the New York City Writing Project. I received a Fellowship from the New York Public Library in Summer 2008 as well as multiple grants from DonorsChoose.org. I have also received a Target Field Trip Grant, and the Curriki Summer of Content grant. I have taken educator workshops with MoMA's art department and Lincoln Center's Imaginative Learning program as well as worked collaboratively with the Irondale Theatre Company to incorporate drama into my classroom. I have also taken summer courses in creative nonfiction writing and oil painting for my own personal enrichment.
