Hello! I hope your summer is going well! My name is Shawn and I am currently an undergraduate student at Columbia University. Undoubtedly, tutors have the monumental responsibility of reinforcing information that students have been exposed to in class, but may not necessarily have a grasp of. My previous professors, was extremely knowledgeable and tried to present information in the most comprehensive way possible, may it be through analogies, charts, or pictures and diagrams they drew themselves, Absolutely, I would want to follow this mode of teaching since visualizing information in this way was definitely beneficial for me, as I'm sure it was for many others. I understand the modes of thinking of many students and I know the topics that many students will have difficulty grasping and what common misunderstands they will have, just from working with others in study groups. In biology, for example, muscles, have been a universal topic of difficulty, just because there were so many characteristics and properties that were both similar and common to each kind of muscle. It was very important for that particular topic to comb through the information oneself and create a comprehensive chart. Enthusiasm will not be a lacking factor either. In fact, it is the big reason that I would like to be a tutor. To me, biology is incredibly interesting and intricate. Even though at first hand, it seems that mastery of this course requires rote memorization, this is not the case at all. In my experience each metabolic or enzymatic pathway is logical and each part has a purpose. Each molecule or hormone works together with another to achieve some general goal of the body. Biology is not unnecessary memorization, but rather something that is structured and full of purpose. Most of the topics are interconnected, may it be muscles, neurons, enzymes, or molecular biology. Understanding, rather than memorizing the course materials will also hopefully help inspire enthusiasm and excitement about learning biology, so understanding is certainly something I would want to stress. As of now, I have taken courses at Columbia which include: Biology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. Recently, I just took the MCAT and received a score of 517. I would be happy to send you any additional materials such as letters of reference or transcripts. Thank you so much for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you. Enjoy the summer!
