Jim L.
Private tutor in New York, NY
Education
I graduated magna cum laude from Johns Hopkins University in 2015 as a premedical and biomedical engineering student. Rather than apply to med school right away, I moved to New York to take time off in order to pursue my Master's in genetics at Columbia University before matriculating to medical school.
Experience
The MCAT changed in 2015 and there is a lot of misinformation on the internet as a result. Tutors and test companies such as Princeton Review and Kaplan alike have been slow to adapt to the changes, and often fail to emphasize what is really tested. There are many misconceptions floating around about what is really tested - having been a premed myself, I know how limited your time is - you cannot afford to spend it preparing for what will not be on the test. Unlike most other tutors, I took the new MCAT myself in May 2015 and scored a 526, a 100th percentile score. I have over 5 years of experience tutoring standardized tests including the SAT, ACT, and SAT II through test-prep agencies, as well as over 1000 hours tutoring for national nonprofits. I have helped dozens of students over five years pass standardized tests. I used my experience helping others prepare for tests to prepare myself for the MCAT, with only the AAMC official guide, some resources freely available online, and my own dedication and hard work. I know my strategies work not only because of the high scores my students have achieved, but because these are the exact same strategies I used to get the 526.
