Experience
One of the most rewarding moments for me as a teacher is seeing students master something they could not do before. Even more rewarding is when they are clearly enjoying it. Although teachers usually have a more expanded view of the breadth of subject knowledge and some things that could be important to learn, students often provide fitting topics and exercises through their particular passions and interests. I like to work with students on a combination of what I see as needed rudiments — for example, scale and chord theory in music, or the alphabet of a language — and a repertoire or curriculum informed by their own interests and inspiration. Over the years, I have developed a sense of how to take a step back with students, to ease the process of learning by understanding, practicing and mastering smaller steps. I am also interested in helping students nurture their own voice and direction within the subject field. Instruction materials and approaches could include method books and collections, improvisation, transcriptions, exercises created by students as well as myself, research on the internet, or anything that expands students’ knowledge of the subject, building on foundations towards a renewed whole.
