Experience

I have been teaching for ten years now, with 9 of those years dedicated primarily to ESL (and ELA) teaching through a variety of different subject areas, although with a special focus on the arts and social sciences. I have taught in many different educational settings including Adult ESL classes in immigration centers in Minnesota and Madrid, classes for university students in Italy, high school teaching assistantships in Madrid, middle school substitutions in Barcelona, private classes for all ages in Madrid, Salamanca, and Barcelona, and preschool classes in Seattle. I am a dynamic, compassionate and passionate, joyful, creative, and hardworking teacher who truly believes in bringing out my students innate intellectual curiosity and creativity, fighting for social justice through education, and making excellent and joyful education available to all. I have the CELTA ceritficate for teaching English to adults the majority of my work for the past 6 years has been dedicated to working with kids aged 4-16. I love teaching and I love working with kids. I also have several years of experience giving extracurricular workshops in cooking, yoga and movement, and environmental outdoor activities. I hold a Bachelors in Romance Languages and Literature (Carleton College, honors, 2009), a Masters in the History and Cultural Anthropology of Food (University of Barcelona, 2013), and am currently in the final year of my PhD in Food Anthropology, writing up my dissertation on food cultures and migrations (University of Barcelona, anticipated completion 2016). The program is run out of the University of Barcelona's Food and Nutrition Department in the Faculty of Pharmacy but I "belong" to the anthropological research line of Consumption, Habits, and Food Cultures that is run out of the Faculty of History and Geography. All of my elective coursework has been done at the University of Barcelona Faculty of Education, with a focus on intercultural learning. I have completed other coursework at the Escuela de Profesionales de Inmigración y Cooperación (EPIC) in Madrid. I hold a CELTA certificate for teaching English to adults, but most all of my recent work has been dedicated to students ages 3-16. In 2009 I was also a J. William Fulbright Fellow in Madrid and in 2014 I was a recipient of the Ruth Landes Memorial Research Fund grant in Austin, Texas and Barcelona. Due to family and personal reasons, I am moving back to my hometown of New York City after many years away and starting in early January of 2016 (next week), I'll be working part-time as the 5th Grade English (and General Studies) Assistant Teacher at the International School of Brooklyn. Despite my multidisciplinary background, what I have always loved most is teaching. I truly feel it is my calling and have pursued other fields in order to enrich myself as a teacher as well as a human being. I love bringing my passions for languages, food, intercultural learning, and social justice and respect into the classroom for students of all ages and hope to bring these special interests of mine to the Upward Bound classes and learning community. Besides the fact that I simply love teaching in all the nitty gritty of its daily work, I also believe that the only way to enact real change in our current world that is struggling so much is through intercultural education, starting from an early age. I believe that excellent, warm, supportive and challenging learning environments should be universally accessible. I work to create the right learning plans for my students. My own academic and professional experience is quite diverse and I bring my own love of learning and varied experience into each and every one of my tutoring sessions. I specifically enjoy Language Arts, teaching English and Spanish, and Social Studies, but have experience with and enjoy a variety of subject areas. I am flexible and creative when it comes to working with others (not only students but also families), always bringing new ideas to the table while still listening and compromising. Thank you very much for considering me as your tutor!
