Education

I earned my Bachelor degree of Engineering in Natural Resources Prospecting from Southwest Petroleum University in 2011. Getting promoted as the manager at the Campus English Radio Station of SWPU and working there for two years is one of my proudest achievements in college. I received my M.A. in Foreign Language Education, 7-12 and TESOL, K-12 from New York University in 2015. Student teaching at Sunset Park elementary and Shuang Wen Middle School, along with getting to visit and observe dozens of local K-12 schools in New York City are my most rewarding moments in graduate school.

Experience

I'm a New York University graduate and a state-certified teacher. I speak both Mandarin and English fluently, while Mandarin Chinese is my primary language. I got my Bachelor's degree in engineering at Southwest Petroleum University in China. I earned my M.A. in education from New York University this May. Regarding my teaching experiences and qualifications, I have been tutoring students in Mandarin Chinese and ESL from diverse backgrounds for over a year. I'm holding two New York State teacher certificates to be qualified to teach in public schools: ESL K-12 and Mandarin Chinese K-12. I am passionate about language learning and how to facilitate more effective language learning, which accounts for the change I made in my major after graduating from college. Though I was originally an engineering major, the teacher training program I received from New York University has well prepared me to be an excellent teacher. Since I'm a li ke sheng (lit. science student) through and through as we'd like to say in Chinese, I always love and I'm good at solving problems which makes me a fairly resourceful and reflective learner. Due to the frustrating learning experiences I got from my secondary schools and college, I'm used to putting myself into struggling students' shoes to see why they are confusing and having trouble making progress. This quality of being very understanding and empathetic with students is my chief asset as a tutor. As an ELL, I went through most of the struggles a late language learner would typically come across. As a result, I can relate to students very well, who, like me, begin to learn another language from secondary school or college. I am convinced that with carefully planned instruction, viable strategies and suitable teaching materials, learning Mandarin Chinese, even when you have passed the critical period, is still achievable and can be fun and engaging as opposed to intimidating and monotonous, contrary to some popular stereotypes.
