Education

Barnard College - Bachelors, Political Science, French , Syracuse University - Masters, Magazine, Newspaper & Online Journalism

Experience

I currently work as a reporter for the TimesLedger Newspapers in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens. I cover general news in the neighborhoods of Flushing, College Point, Whitestone and Fresh Meadows. I received my master's degree in magazine, newspaper and online journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and my bachelor's degree in political science and French at Barnard College in New York City. While at Barnard, I took beginning French, intermediate French and advanced grammar and composition in French. I also took courses on French colonial history, laughter in the Middle Ages and Renaissance and the French research seminar, in which I wrote my French thesis. I studied abroad in Paris during my junior year of college, where I took an intensive grammar course, a course that looked at diverse communities in Paris and explored political, social, historical, racial and urban issues in Paris. I also took two courses at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris, or Sciences Po: a political science course called International Realities and a history class looking at the genesis of French society. My political science courses focused on political theory; the American presidency; international relations; women, gender and political markets; and the qualities and characteristics of democratic systems. My political science thesis looked at why Mayotte, one of the four islands in the Comoros archipelago, chose to remain under French rule while the other islands decided to become independent. My French thesis, which was written in French, looked at whether soccer can help integrate minorities in France. In graduate school, I took a variety of courses, including introductory reporting and writing classes, newspaper editing and political reporting, which focused extensively on the structure of a news article and specific writing techniques. I have work experience in journalism, politics, publishing and public relations. I worked as one of two head copy chiefs and a fact-checker for Vertical Floor, a tablet magazine about parkour, a movement discipline. I also worked as a continuous news producer for The NewsHouse, a multimedia news site run by Syracuse University, and The Stand, a community newspaper covering the Southside neighborhood of Syracuse. I also worked as the classroom magazines intern for Scholastic's Action Magazine, a classroom magazine for kids with low reading levels and as the business development intern for Weber Shandwick, a public relations firm in New York City, where I completed a competitive analysis project of 15 public relations firms and helped develop a media relations strategy for PepsiCo's Eco-Fina bottle. I would like to tutor individuals in the areas of writing, editing and French. I enjoy teaching and helping people in those areas as it gives me an opportunity to not only help them get better in those respective subjects but because I get to test my writing and French skills in a variety of settings. I have edited college and graduate school personal statements and essays, cover letters and résumés for family members and friends. I honestly get joy and a rise out of editing. I tutored a student in intermediate French once a week during my junior year of college.

Hobbies

Writing is a big part of my life. I have a blog in which I talk about my professional experiences, my life experiences and what I read about in the news. I also keep a journal in which I keep track of my personal, professional and life goals. I am committed to doing work in the African community as well. I am part of the Miss Guinea USA Organization, a Bronx-based organization that hosts a pageant for young Guinean women every year to promote women's empowerment. We encourage the contestants to come up with a platform that would entail one issue they would like to tackle in Guinea. I also write for ZNews Africa, a mobile news app that aggregates news primarily in West African countries and produces original features on African-related events and businesses in New York City. I exercise regularly, practicing yoga, running and occasionally going to the gym. Furthermore, I am a family-oriented person who spends quality time with her family regularly.
