Experience

I am an experienced teacher and tutor- I was a classroom teacher for six years, in early childhood and elementary classrooms, most of which were integrated classrooms. I have tutored students from Pre-K to college, in everything from homework help to college research papers. My specialty is literacy—I have had a lot of success with struggling readers. I firmly believe that every child can learn to read—well!—and that sometimes children need to be introduced to different strategies in order to meet their full potential as readers. I think that one-on-one instruction is an incredibly effective way to learn, but it is not always available to every student all the time. Tutors can make sure that students are truly understanding and retaining information so that they do not need to feel as if they are struggling in the classroom. I have a special education background and as such, a strong understanding of different needs and abilities. I’d say that what makes me a great tutor is the attitude with which I approach the work at hand—with an incredible amount of patience and sensitivity to the students, their families, and their teachers.
