Experience

I love tutoring! I'm a Harvard and UC Berkeley grad, as well as a writer, actor, musician and scholar. I've been tutoring, teaching and coaching for ten years, including years of experience teaching at New York private and charter schools. ACADEMICS My experience ranges from kindergarten up through middle school, high school and even college students. Excellent SAT and AP scores (available on request). I specialize in subjects including English, Writing (Analytical, Persuasive, Expository, Scientific, Application-Based, Creative), Literature, Spanish (fluent), Math (through BC Calculus), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Social Studies (U.S. / World History), among others. I have also prepared students for the Regents tests, SAT, ACT, and other assessments. More qualifications: www.elijahguotutoring.com ACTING, PERFORMANCE, and SPEECH/VOCAL SKILLS I also coach acting, speech or performance-related subjects. My MFA experience as an actor and studying and performing at the Moscow Art Theater, has given me a very clear sense of how I can help others become stronger artists and people. I've also received some of the best speech training in the country, with mentors like Deb Sussel and Lynn Soffer (Edith Skinner's American Theatre Standard), Nancy Houfek and Jane Guyer-Fujita (Fitzmaurice Method) and Fonta Hadley, Lisa Anne Porter, Drew Khalouf and David Hammond (text and Shakespeare). I firmly believe that acting, speech and performance experience can be helpful for those dealing with social problems, or jobs where speech/elocution or social interaction is necessary. MUSIC As a graduate of the Certificate Merit (Panel) and National Guild of Piano Players Associations, trained in classical piano and jazz/classical trumpet, as well as a proficient songwriter (experience from the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop), I'd be excited to tutor anyone of any age or experience level with any style of music in piano, guitar or trumpet! (PRE) COLLEGE, INTERVIEW/AUDITION, AND STUDY SKILLS I've gone through the experiences of college and grad-school prep, interviews, meetings and auditions, and will gladly share what I've learned that got me into UC Berkeley and Harvard, as well as the organizational and professional skills needed for doing efficient work of high quality in school, and in preparation for school. I've also helped high school students feel comfortable with college through coordinating work with the orientation programs through the Alumni Scholars Association: Berkeley Experience Program and Overnight Stay Program - I'm approachable and friendly!

Hobbies

As an actor, writer and musician, I possess a desire to understand humanity in all its social, cultural, historical, psychological and artistic qualities. My work as a playwright, screenwriter and poet have focused on powerful women in history -- and my interest in creating work centers around the empowerment of underrepresented voices. Cosmology and philosophy have been of particular interest to me as of late, and as far as discussion is concerned no subject is taboo -- as is the spirit of inquiry!
