Experience

ACT Scores English: 35 Mathematics: 30 Reading: 33 Combined English/Writing: 33 Writing (score range 2-12): 10 Science: 22 ---------------- For nearly three years, I managed the Barnard Babysitting Agency, an entirely student-run business that acts as a clearinghouse between over 900 New York City families and more than 1,300 student sitters. During my tenure at the agency, I simultaneously assumed the responsibilities of human resources representative, accountant, customer service guru, recruiter, and CEO. I trained, managed, and collaborated with a team of five employees, instituted revenue-raising policies and programs, innovated and improved our job database, and recruited babysitters to attend agency orientations that I coordinated and lead. Most importantly, I provided excellent customer service to the parents and babysitters with whom I maintained constant communication. Through these countless conversations, I learned how to best anticipate clients’ needs and assuage their concerns as well as utilize language to craft job listings that appeal to sitters and satisfy parents. The communication, leadership, and public speaking skills that I acquired will allow me to foster meaningful relationships with clients and create tutoring strategies that are tailored to fit individuals’ personalities, abilities, and goals. While working at the Barnard Babysitting agency, I also served as a research analyst intern and receptionist at Impala Asset Management, a Connecticut-based hedge fund. Although I was initially hired at Impala in a purely administrative role, my ability to both learn and think fast ensured that I was promoted within a year. As an analyst intern, my responsibilities included constructing financial models of companies within the automotive, tire, and homebuilding sector, compiling cash flow statements, balance sheets, income statements, and regional breakdown pages, and performing investment research. Additionally, Impala afforded me the opportunity to research, update, and systematically organize information in several databases, compile expense reports, and plan high profile political luncheons. The analytical tools and administrative knowledge that I garnered strengthened my critical thinking skills and taught me how to balance the duties of two challenging positions while managing a full-time college course load. As a result, I excel at organization and time-management, two qualities that are absolutely imperative to tutoring success. In May 2015, I graduated cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University, having attained a 3.83 cumulative GPA and been on Dean’s List every semester I was enrolled. I chose to major in sociology because it gave me a deep respect and understanding for other cultures, perspectives, and ideas. My major also provided me with the exciting prospect of performing my own research, which I happily and hungrily did. To compliment my sociological coursework, I also studied Chemistry, French, Environmental Science, Women’s Studies, Psychology, and so much more. Because Barnard is a liberal arts college, they place a tremendous emphasis on learning a little bit about a lot of things and wholeheartedly enjoying it. I can confidently say that during my time at Barnard, I certainly did. It is my greatest intention as a tutor to inspire this love of life-long learning in my clients as Barnard inspired in me. I have been called, and unpretentiously call myself, a wordsmith. Writing allows me to capture the thoughts flying through my mind and meticulously, preciously, mold their meanings. I write so I can understand myself better, and as a result, I am better able to understand the world around me. I write because sometimes the words I casually spew out in informal conversations just don’t have enough time to marinate and absorb the flavor I know they could impart. Mostly, I write because my voice is unabashedly me—honest, warm, and a little tongue-in-cheek. As a writing tutor or creative content consultant, I would love to help you find your voice or maybe just learn to listen to it a little better. ---------------- For further details regarding my work history and academic credentials, please request a copy of my resume and/or academic transcript. ---------------- Feel free to visit my website or connect on LinkedIn: http://kelseylaurenhand.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelseylaurenhand
