I am interested in this position because of my passion for education. I will use this position to empower the students like how I was empowered as a kid. I remember my grandfather used to tell me about stories about his engineering career. He taught me the importance of being focused and self-determined, and he inspired my interest in math and science. As a tutor, I would work to inspire these students through my leadership, enthusiasm and patience. My interest in education began the summer after my freshman year in high school when I decided to give back to the community that had sparked my interest in engineering by volunteering as a science camp counselor at a camp in my community for at risk kids in the Washington DC area called KidPower. Each day, the counselors and I would lead experiments with the kids to teach them an important law or theory in science. I found out that this was the first time many of the kids had the opportunity to conduct a science experiment and experience a hands-on project. On the first day of the camp, the kids would often lose focus during my demonstrations, but the following week, they were completely engaged and even started asking questions about the theory that I was teaching. By the end of the camp, the kids got excited whenever I mentioned science instead of groaning as they did at the beginning because they had realized the coolest part about science which is that if you look hard enough, you will see that science is all around us. My experience teaching at a science camp motivated me to apply to be a teacher at the NSBE Summer Engineering Experience for Kids’ (SEEK) Program, a STEM pipeline program designed to expose black elementary and middle students to STEM fields, after my senior year of high school. Although the SEEK camp only accepted juniors and seniors in college as teachers in the program, my application proved that I was capable to handle the responsibility of teaching students engineering concepts. Unfortunately, the two other colleges student teachers assigned to my classroom were not able to participate in the program so for 3 weeks I taught a class of 12 7th graders by myself. The position required that I create lesson plans and activities to cover all of the concepts in the weekly curriculum guides that we were given. During the lunch and snack breaks, I provided intensive tutoring to small groups of students who were struggling with the math concepts. The position taught me patience, professionalism, hard work and how to maintain accurate records of the students' progress. I believe that I was successful in my role because I am highly motivated and have strong communication and organizational skills which I will need for this position. My strong work ethic, experience working with students and organizational skills that I have acquired through my various leadership roles and previous positions are an ideal match for this position.
