Experience
- I have extensive childcare experience, and have continued to take care of children over this past year. Increasingly, as I was called upon to help with homework, reading and other projects, I realised I had a specific, nuanced skill-set and a way to communicate with young people that would make them as passionate as I am about history - Originally from Scotland, I moved to the US after high school to study at NYU. This international perspective, and the differences I saw between teaching in Britain and America, made me really consider the methods that are effective. How can we create understanding rather than simply retention? How do we foster debate rather than just acceptance? These are the questions that initially attracted me to tutoring - I love to teach and, as cliched as it may sound, I love what I learn from teaching - I thrive on debate and challenges, and that is what makes learning exciting and vibrant - I love working with people and taking a leadership role - I was selected from amongst thousands of undergraduates to study leadership under NYU's President and Vice President in my sophomore year due to my strengths in this area; I find it easy to galvanise and motivate people - I also work as a writer, director and performer, and studied at the Tisch School of the Arts Experimental Theatre Wing, the USA's preeminent experimental program. I have worked at La Mama ETC, The Living Gallery, and Manhattan Repertory Theatre since graduation, amongst others. I have also studied theatre as a form of therapy and a tool for youth education, and have a strong academic understanding of dramaturgy, theatrical text, and classical text in addition to performing experience. I believe this gives me a unique perspective on communication and the relationship between art and academia.

I love art, culture, heated debate, travel, reading, writing, running, live music and thinking outside the box. I believe one should never take anything for granted, even if the thing seems like the most obvious, and always challenge, push, and ask. I'm excited by engaging with other humans and love people with a passion for learning. I have a strong work ethic, a unique perspective, and a love of education and knowledge that I know I can instil in young people from all walks of life. I live on the Lower East Side and also enjoy cooking (and subsequently eating) Italian food.
