Experience
SAT: 800M, 750CR, 740 W Currently mathematics faculty at Bard High School Early College, Newark Campus. I also tutor my students in SAT material and run training sessions for a local tutoring nonprofit, preparing their new tutors with effective strategies. What led me to my career in teaching was how much I loved tutoring in math and writing in high school and college; my motivation is seeing a student's spark of excitement when they make a breakthrough understanding. I teach common-core aligned curriculum and, while I understand how difficult it can seem to shift, I believe all students can rise to the new expectations, if the material is prepared the right way. What led me specifically to teaching math was the gap between the elegance - and even beauty - the subject has in my mind and the way so many people view it as simply a mindless hodgepodge of procedures to follow. I try to convey the meaning of what you are doing, not just the procedure. I have nine years experience tutoring all parts of the SAT, and I can help you see the structure of that test and the logic of that test. Students working with me on the SAT have regularly improved their scores by over a hundred points.
