Education

English major and Psychology minor Graduate at Yeshiva University

Experience

Currently I teach three classes for a summer school in Queens, all English subjects including writing. I originally joined the school to substitute for four math classes, raging from grades 4 to 12. I have been working on more classes since the summer started, bolstering my skills set and curriculum outlook. My students challenge me to keep myself on my feet and look for ways for them to find interest in subject material. I tutored at a local middle school in Washington Heights in Eighth grade math. This experience gave me a real understanding on what goes on in the classroom. I was able to tutor kids as they learned the material and while other students learned more directly from the teacher. Last summer I taught two groups of students in a camp setting. I learned how curricula develop over time and what makes them effective by hearing from the heads of camp and utilizing source materials in my own fashion in every lesson. I also had to consistently look for ways to reach the students' minds and make the material speak to their current state. My goal is to become a teacher and to gain the skills necessary to teach effectively. I love the education field in general, so I'm hoping that will allow me to push through and succeed as a teacher. Next year I plan on teaching and taking classes in graduate school for English Education. As an English major, I developed strong reading, writing, and discussion skills which I have already integrated into teaching experiences and other projects. I appreciate the human aspects of English studies, a focus that I have mixed into many of my other studies since middle school. In the past 8 years, I was a counselor for a local organization, for which I planned and ran events once a month Saturdays in Philadelphia. The kids always enjoyed the programming, asked questions, and felt engaged through games and discussion. I have also worked the phones at my University, calling alumni for donations and explaining why it is important to give back, what the money goes for, and what the University means for us students.

Hobbies

Guitar is my favorite hobby, where I can be creative and play my own tunes. I have gotten into writing lyrics and singing, and have played with a band infrequently throughout college. Next up is my second album which I will release on Soundcloud, and right now I am working on finishing music, singing and lyrics for the next month. Otherwise, I have written for my own blog once a week, and I currently aim to write more frequently for skills building and to draw out things I think about on a daily basis. I love to read various types of books, including biographies, sports history, and classics. I like soccer and baseball, but mostly play basketball, about once a week. Baseball statistics are intriguing to me, and I am always looking to have conversations about who is playing well throughout the season. Going to games is something I cherish as well. The whole production of baseball games provides constant entertainment for those who like the game and even those who don't really follow.
