Education

Sophomore Mathematics major at the University of Rochester (Honors B.A. - Class of 2018, on an academic scholarship)

Experience

I have quite a bit of tutoring experience, spread out across a number of different fields and age groups. I've tutored basic math and grammar to elementary school students for extended periods of time, and I've also tutored AP Chemistry and English to high school juniors. I'm also fluent in both English and Spanish, and possess fantastic communication skills! That is, in particular, I tend to get along very well with both students and people in general. Courses I've taken in college thus far include topics in Chemistry, single and multivariable differential and integral calculus, discrete mathematics, and physics. As a math major, I use algebra, trig and calculus every day of my life. I feel more than comfortable teaching students these topics, as I have consistently received marks near the top of my grade in these subjects. Over the years I have developed a deep intuitive grasp of these subjects, as it is only in their application as tools to solve more intricate problems can one understand and appreciate the beauty and utility of them. My goal in teaching is the following: to help my students understand /why/ math makes sense. I want students to be able to recognize that there is a reason why they are learning formulas, and realize when and where it is appropriate to apply their knowledge. Oftentimes the issue lies not in a student's ability to learn given material, but in recognizing when that material is applicable to a problem. As a tutor, I will emphasize exposing students to examples that help them learn about how to go about solving a problem before even taking pencil to paper. In addition, I aim to make the learning experience outside the classroom something fun! In short, I love learning, and I am very excited to help students develop and experience for themselves that very same love!

Hobbies

I'm part of a service group at my school that puts together/sponsors activities both on and off campus. These activities serve both to benefit the community and provide opportunities for people to come together, and it's lots of fun! I also love chess dearly (I played in tournaments throughout high school), music and recreational mathematics/astronomy among other, less interesting hobbies.
