Henry L.

Private tutor in New York, NY

Education

Currently a senior at Hunter College High School with 92.6 GPA.

Experience

Hunter is a rigorous and intensive college preparatory school that cultivates an environment of strong academics with a balance of humanities and sciences. Admission is offered after evaluation of a difficult admissions test administered in 6th grade. I’ve been at Hunter for 6 years now, and will be attending Cornell University in the Fall. I previously did after school tutoring at P.S. 163 on the Upper West Side. I worked with elementary school kids whose first language was not English, and kids who were behind in relation to the rest of their grade. The focus was primarily on English and Mathematics, but I occasionally helped with assignments for other classes. I have previously worked as a day camp counselor where my job was to keep the children, ranging from ages 6 to 12, occupied by playing games with them or doing arts and crafts. I have been a math tutor at my school since 10th grade, and am currently a Writing Center mentor at school, where I help revise and edit other students written assignments. I currently work as a tutor twice a week at the Stanley Isaacs neighborhood center on the Upper East Side, where I assist two middle school students with homework and test prep. I received a total score of 2230 on my SAT, with a 780 in Writing, a 740 in Critical Reading, and a 710 in Math. I received a score of 740 on the Literature SAT II, and a 710 on the U.S. History SAT II.

Hobbies

Over the summer I interned at the Museum of Arts and Design where I conducted tours of galleries for youth groups varying in age. I continued my internship at the museum into the school year, and helped plan and put together the annual Teen Night and Family Night. I'm very active in the theater community at my school. I've dabbled in just about every field available; acting, directing, stage managing, set building, costume design, etc. There is a rarely a theater production at school that I haven't somehow been involved in. I love working with children. I am patient but know when to be stern. I’ve always been good at communicating with children and keeping them on task. I have two younger siblings, a 7 year old brother and a 13 year old sister, both of whom often require homework help that I am happy to offer. I occasionally babysit for neighbors. I’ve worked with younger children extensively and know how to speak to them, relate to them and maintain their interest. I am passionate, motivated, goal oriented and hard working. I am taking rigorous courses at school and have done well in previous years and on standardized tests. I think that I have everything that it takes to be a good tutor, and would love the opportunity to demonstrate it. Thank you for considering me!
