Experience

I am extremely interested in improving education from a student learning perspective. Instead of only asking how we can develop better teachers, I also ask how we can develop better learners. By improving one's ability to learn, I hope to help students not only understand the current subject but also how to independently learn new, similar subjects. I tutor the MCAT because it is a particularly useful assessment for developing learning skills. The MCAT is difficult not only because it requires mastery of a large body of content, but also a mastery of applying the content to unfamiliar contexts. For example, a 'cooperative process' is a content area that comes up frequently. The first step is to understand what 'cooperativity' is. The second then is to apply the idea of 'cooperativity' to contexts not previously encountered. For example, the MCAT may ask about 'cooperativity' in the context of protein melting curves. The challenge and rigor of the MCAT provide an excellent opportunity to develop better learners. To help students become more effective learners, I want to focus on two areas: 1) cognitive processes 2) physical practices. By cognitive processes, I mean areas such as precision of thought and self-monitoring (i.e. metacognition). By physical practices, I mean the tangible actions during study such as review schedule and learning strategy. I believe these areas are really important in becoming an effective learner. In fact, while at Princeton, I developed a curriculum addressing these learning effectiveness ideas. To continue to pursue this work, I was selected a 2017 Rhodes, Gates-Cambridge, and Sachs Scholarship Finalist. As a student who struggled to learn effectively and efficiently, I am eager to help others become better learners. The MCAT, being an exam which offers immediate feedback, provides an excellent training ground for one to become a more effective learner.
