Experience
I earned a degree in Mathematics for the College of William and Mary, some of the classes I enjoyed most were partial differential equations, calculus of variations and probability theory. I have spent the past 3 summers tutoring students in math, mainly for standardized exams but also in HS, IB and French Baccalaureate Math. I spent the spring of 2014 as a tutor/coach at tennis academy for student athletes in NJ. I am passionate about tutoring because it always presents an interesting challenge. All students have different brains and respond differently to different methods of teaching. Understanding how a student thinks about math is crucial to transmitting knowledge. My experience in tutoring has taught me to adapt to each student, there is no one formula. Mathematics is simply the study of translating concepts present in nature into symbols to facilitate further analysis. When students are able the make the connection between patterns and concepts they already understand intuitively and how these are translated mathematically, the subject becomes a lot less tedious. Many students dont have the right teachers/mentors to help them make that connection, and they end up convincing themselves that they are bad at math. For me, helping students gain more confidence in their abilities is the more rewarding outcome of tutoring.
