Private tutor in New York, NY

Education

SUNY Purchase, BFA Fine art/English; classes at Bennington College, Brandeis University, The New School

Experience

My 30 years of experience includes teaching at Syracuse University, NYC's The Door, The Academic Advantage, The Gotham Writers' Workshop, Little Red School House, John Jay High School, and 826NYC, one of Dave Eggers' seven spectacular nationwide homework help centers for underprivileged children. I have also taken many of the teaching classes that 826NYC offers its tutors. As a published writer and editor, writing coach, and the sister of a learning disabled younger brother, I have spent my entire life teaching in one way or another, including training and mentoring 200 college-aged interns at Harper's Magazine, where I was an editor and writer for 20 years, working closely with writers including David Foster Wallace, Joyce Carol Oates, George Saunders, Michael Pollan, Nadine Gordimer, T.C. Boyle, George Plimpton, Rick Russo, Jack Hitt, and Allan Gurganus, as well as with emerging ones. I also wrote and edited the globally syndicated Harper's Index, and wrote three books based on the feature, appearing as a regular co-host on a segment celebrating the Index on Chicago's NPR station. My editing has won three National Magazine Awards and my own fiction has won Honorable Mention in Best American Short Stories, and has been anthologized in a book for classroom work. Since Harper's, I have edited over 30 books, many of which have been bought by major publishers, and created and taught writing and reading workshops at various NYC schools and at universities and conferences nationwide. In addition, I am an artist who has sold her work, and uses drawing to enhance the teaching of writing and reading, I am also an experienced counselor who knows how to unearth confidence and joy in any learner.
