Education

I graduated in May 2014 from Truman State University with a BS in Chemistry. After graduating, I worked as a research specialist in chemistry for an electrical engineering research group at the University of Missouri in Columbia. I was able to actively apply my knowledge of chemistry to an ongoing research effort outside of my direct area of study, and I learned some of the inherent differences between the academic approach of engineers and scientists. It was fun and rewarding to adapt my problem solving skills to a new field of study.

Experience

During my time as an undergraduate I volunteered as a chemistry tutor for students enrolled in chemistry courses at my University. I met with students in the evening to help them develop a better understanding of core chemical concepts and work through any areas they had problems with. I found that the best approach was to keep the students as relaxed as possible, especially while we were working on particularly taxing subjects. Students often get overwhelmed with the amount of information they are responsible for understanding, and showing them how to break up ideas into smaller concepts that compound on one another helps ease the tension that comes with learning new information.
