Private tutor in New York, NY

Education

Double majored in Math and Economics at Yale University, previously a PhD candidate at NYU (Math) (started taking classes again a few years ago)

Experience

Highly rated instructor at NYU (calculus for econ majors); Many years of tutoring experience with students from 14 to 40 Yale graduate and current math graduate student at NYU. Amongst the highest rated recitation leaders at NYU. Tutoring all math levels up to and including AP Math BC (or Calc II for college students). Also tutor introductory economics and even basic physics (mechanics). I strongly disagree with the idea that either you are born good at math or not. In reality, *anyone* can learn math and those who hate math or otherwise think along the lines of "I just can't do it" have had a bad and/or discouraging teacher or just buy into the myths! Being good at math is a matter of seeing how it's done and then applying what you've learned in examples. Unfortunately, math is not something that can be crammed the night before. Fortunately, once the student gains more confidence in their abilities their need for 'hand-holding' decreases. In working with students, it is my goal to move them to a state where they are much more self-sufficient and only require targeted assistance - *** I truly believe that once a student 'finds' their way, they will be able to proceed with much less hand holding *** I like to have a 15-20 minute conversation with each prospective student (and parent(s) if applicable) prior to starting work to ensure we are both on the same page in terms of goals and expectations.
