Education

I'm a junior Literature and Writing/education major at The New School for Liberal Arts with a 4.0 GPA. I am a Horatio Alger National Scholar, and I am also a Random House poetry contest winner.

Experience

I am a writer and an aspiring elementary school teacher. I am also a literature enthusiast. I have various different experience working with children and all of them have been very rewarding for me. I used to teach dance to preschool aged students and this afforded me an immense amount of experience and taught me the great deal of patience involved with working with children, especially younger children. I volunteered for a year with the Jumpstart Reader's program. This a program where once to twice a week volunteers come into preschool classrooms of underprivileged school districts and implement lesson plans and learning strategies for disadvantaged students. Through art, reading, and fun activities, children who would usually fall behind due to lack of reading skill in earlier developmental stages learn the basics of reading. I worked with the kids in groups and one on one to teach them the basics of their numbers as well as highlighting key vocabulary functions through arts and crafts and sing a longs. Aside from experience working with younger children I also have experience working with older school aged students as well. I volunteered in a program called Street Squash, as a literature and writing homework helper for students in grades 6-8. During this time I also volunteered assisting a writing program for elementary level students at the Harlem Children Zone. Here we held creative writing workshops that helped students learn a love for writing. I want to tutor because while in college I can't really think of a more rewarding thing to do with my time. I'm looking to build as much experience as possible working with children for my teaching career. When I was younger I had trouble with reading and self motivation to read better is what led me to the literary studies track I am now on. Though, I wished that I had someone to sit and help me with my reading and writing skills. These things are very integral to the learning basis of all subjects. I want to be able to help children learn to love reading and develop strong writing skills. Through my experience nothing has been better than seeing the progression of students that I have given my time to. And I only hope to contribute more.
