Private tutor in New York, NY

Education

BA from Yale University (2011, 3.8 GPA) - majored in Literature and History, graduated with honors. For high school, I attended the Trinity School here in NY, where I was active in student life and graduated with highest honors. Before that I went to the Lycee Francais de New York. Teaching and mentoring have been great passions of mine since I can remember. In addition to my tutoring, I currently work as a writer/filmmaker and as an educator at a homeless youth shelter (where I help students prepare for the GED and Nurses' Aide Certification exam, as well as with job readiness).

Experience

Hi there! I've been tutoring high school and junior high students for almost two years. I can help you prepare for the SAT or any number of SAT subject tests; outline and go through the process of writing an essay or term paper for a history, English, religion, or social studies class; prepare for a French test or provide help with a particularly difficult assignment. Having spent so many years of my life intently focused on standardized tests myself (having attended one of the most demanding prep schools in NY), I know how daunting it can be to juggle the competing demands of an extensive school workload AND intense preparation for standardized tests. I know how stressful these tests can be and love helping my students understand that they are mind-games more than real tests of content. I enjoy finding fun and creative ways of helping my students approach questions on these tests, and new ways ways to make difficult subject matter more compelling and accessible. I test very well (2310 on the SAT, 99th percentile on the GRE, 97th percentile on the LSAT) and love helping my students beat the test-makers. I get so much satisfaction seeing my students' numbers improve as they come to better understand the test. In addition to test prep, I can help with general subject support, essays, homework, and long term assignments. I love teaching real academic subjects (pretty much any subject or skill, although languages, history/humanities, writing, and algebra/geometry are my core strengths).
