Private tutor in New York, NY
Education
Duke University (2009-2010). University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A. Mathematics, May 2013).
Experience
My specialties are the PSAT and SAT, and in assisting with writing/proof-reading documents. On my SAT, I scored a 2280, with a 790 in Writing, 710 in Math, and 780 in Critical Reading. I majored in mathematics in college, and so also enjoy teaching pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, and pre-calculus. In terms of experience, in college I tutored international students in English writing, and have proofread and edited over 15 English papers. I have thoroughly enjoyed this. In particular, several students for whom English is a second language have come to me, a native English speaker (and friend), for grammatical, syntactical, or stylistic feedback on their papers. Often, they requested that I simply proofread their work, but I took pleasure in taking the extra step: explaining the rationale for my edits. Only by breaking down my editorial reasoning, I felt, would my friends learn and improve. I took personal satisfaction from this pedagogical step, and over the years, I did see their writing significantly improve. Through private tutoring, I am able to make a significant impact because I can focus on a student's particular problem areas and then apply my skills. Both my mathematics education and editing experiences have taught me how to: break down complex problems, pinpoint the logic underlying their solutions, and effectively communicate this logic. If you (or your child) are struggling in any of the subjects above, or simply wish to maximize your current skills and shoot higher, I'll do my best to help you achieve your goals!
