Experience

Hello, I'm Julie. I am a graduate of Brandeis University and currently work for a legal advocacy nonprofit. I graduated summa cum laude, with highest honors in my major. My thesis, which won an award, analyzed the ways in which religious college undergraduates (all Jewish and Muslim women) negotiate their individual and group identity through clothing. In college, I participated in a blogging fellowship through the Women's Studies Center, and wrote two blog articles that were published on the Huffington post (through my mentor, who contributes articles). I am a licensed elementary school teacher (grades 1-6) and have extensive experience working with children. I have completed a full semester of student teaching (fourth grade), as well as 3 semesters of working in elementary school classrooms. I am well-versed in elementary school teaching methods. In addition to my traditional classroom experience, I tutored a seventh grade child during my time at Brandeis, and I also worked at a summer theater camp. I also served as a teaching assistant for a course entitled "Sociology of Body and Health." In this role, I designed a weekly breakout session, pushing my students to expand their understanding of sociological theories of the body and engaging them in thoughtful discussions. I also researched and designed a lecture, for presentation to the 60-person class. I have taken extensive coursework in pedagogy, including Science/Social Studies Teaching Methods, Elementary School Literacy Development, Developmental Psychology, and Elementary Mathematics instruction. Aside from my interest in education, I maintain a strong interest in social science research and non-profit work. During college, I interned at the United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, helping staff to investigate alleged discrimination in federally funded educational institutions. I also interned at an international development organization called American Jewish World Service. I absolutely love fostering academic achievement and confidence in children, and I am excited at the prospect of tutoring your child. I plan on returning to the education field in the capacity of a classroom teacher, as I genuinely believe in education as a tool of empowerment for young people. AP Exam Scores: AP English Language and Composition: 5 AP English Literature: 4 AP Calculus (AB): 5 AP Spanish Language: 5 AP Environmental Science: 5 AP Biology: 5 AP United States History: 5 Honors/Awards: - Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society - Irving Kenneth Zola Prize for Excellence in Sociology - 2011 Doris Brewer Cohen Endowment Award (for Senior Thesis, awarded to just a few undergraduates) - 2010 Rapaporte Foundation Summer Internship Grant - Spring 2010 Undergraduate Research Fellowship - 2009 Louis D.Brandeis Social Justice World of Work Fellowship - Brandeis University Presidential Scholarship
