I've taught Literature, Composition, Creative Writing (fiction and non-fiction), Writing for Electronic Media, and many literature courses at Pratt Institute, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Ulster, Sarah Lawrence College, and more. I wrote a book for Random House/Clarkson Potter about learning to cook at the Culinary Institute of America. I was a staff writer for 7 years at Martha Stewart Living, and I've written about music, movies, and books for Vice, New York Newsday, the New York Times, the Boston Phoenix; I've also published my fiction in a number of literary journals. I got help from tutors when I was in high school and college and it made a huge difference in what I was able to accomplish later. I want to return the favor. My entire professional career has centered around writing and books (except for a couple years managing a barbecue restaurant--actually, yes, I do have some good recipes--and a brief stint building sets for West Elm furniture photo shoots) and I've picked up a lot of practical tips and tricks along the way. I tend to believe the same things about good writing and effective reading that teachers believed in "ye olden days": good is good across the whole spectrum. This is true when it comes to reading, no matter the genre, who the author was, when they wrote it, or why--the important thing is a good foundational knowledge in how to evaluate and analyze other people's writing. And it's true for one's own writing--when you learn to write well and effectively, it's applicable to any sort of writing anyone is asked to do.

Hobbies
If I'm not teaching reading or writing, I'm usually doing reading or writing on my own. Or watching movies. And a lot of times I'm doing all that with my 7-year-old son (I'm pretty conversant in anything to do with Star Wars, Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and every single episode of Captain Underpants).
