Hi, my name is Jessica. I have over four years of tutoring experience in essay writing as well as in ESL writing, reading and speaking. During my undergraduate years, I worked as a peer tutor in the University's Writing Center where I helped college students achieve better results on their course essays. I also have two years of experience as a private tutor for high school students. WRITING & ESSAY DEVELOPMENT: For native English-speaking students, I specialize in reading comprehension, thesis development, essay structure, and research. Before picking at sentence-level details (grammar, punctuation, etc.) I believe it is first and foremost important to understand the reading material. Then we move on to developing a full thesis, which can eventually be fleshed out in a well-written essay. I use a whole-picture approach to successfully guide student writers toward becoming better readers and writers. ESL WRITING, READING & SPEAKING: With specialized training in tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL) students through the University of Michigan, I understand the strengths and weaknesses of ESL students, often depending on their various backgrounds, study skills, and interests. And because of my experience working with non-native English speakers, I am aware of and sensitive to their different needs. From basic essay development to grammar to conversational English, I can help ESL students master the skills they feel need to be improved.
