Education

I am currently a Junior Psychology major at Clemson University, also pursuing a minor in Creative Writing. I have a cumulative GPA for 3.83, and have earned a 4.0 standing for every semester except for the first semester of my freshman year at Clemson. I graduated in the top ten of my high school class, and was a member of the National Honor Society. I am passionate about writing and creating, as well as understanding the connections between the scientific world and the human experience.

Experience

I was a National Semifinalist in the Discovery Channel/3M Young Scientist Challenge from 2008-2011, representing New Hampshire at a national level. I received a 5 on the AP US History exam, and also completed AP Economics, AP European History, and AP Statistics and received "A" grades. I earned a 2150 three-part SAT score, and a 1440 two-part score. In high school, I received an achievement award from the National Council of Teachers of English. I graduated in the top ten of my high school class, and served as Quiz Bowl captain for my junior and senior year. I took the SSAT in the 7th grade, and scored in the 99th percentile in the reading comprehension and verbal categories. I have taken many classes at a college-level in social sciences, as well as writing, literature, and an amalgam of periphery topics ranging from philosophy to fungi.

Hobbies

I pride myself in being well-rounded and ambitious, but laid-back and understanding where it counts. Inevitably, all subjects are connected at some level, and having a broad understanding of many facets of life and how they interact is crucial. Regardless of how important an upcoming exam may be, however, as a student of psychology I understand the importance of placing mental and emotional well-being first, and believe there is a way for everyone to overcome challenges without ruining the whole point of education. I have a passion for learning, but also play in three bands on the side, ranging from punk music to folk. I enjoy painting, gardening, travelling, and reading in addition to music. I am the eldest of three children and seven cousins, and spent a great deal of my childhood assisting them with schoolwork. Despite my eventual educational successes, in the 4th grade, the very same year I first won the Discovery Education/3M Young Scientist Challenge, I received an incomplete (failing) grade in science. Science was my favorite subject, however despite my passion for learning, I had road blocks impeding my success I had to learn how to compensate for. Overcoming organizational and time-management issues was my primary struggle. I would do well on tests and quizzes, but misplaced every piece of homework I was assigned for an entire semester, and struggled to meet deadlines and figure out how to organize my life and my learning. This led to discouragement, self-doubt, and anxiety, and I feel for all students who struggle with these issues. Gradually, I became aware of my own shortcomings and strengths, and figured out what worked for me and what did not. I truly believe that everyone is capable of brilliance, sometimes we all need help figuring out a system that works for us and that allows us to reach our full potential as learners.
