Hobbies
I pride myself in being well-rounded and ambitious, but laid-back and understanding where it counts. Inevitably, all subjects are connected at some level, and having a broad understanding of many facets of life and how they interact is crucial. Regardless of how important an upcoming exam may be, however, as a student of psychology I understand the importance of placing mental and emotional well-being first, and believe there is a way for everyone to overcome challenges without ruining the whole point of education. I have a passion for learning, but also play in three bands on the side, ranging from punk music to folk. I enjoy painting, gardening, travelling, and reading in addition to music. I am the eldest of three children and seven cousins, and spent a great deal of my childhood assisting them with schoolwork. Despite my eventual educational successes, in the 4th grade, the very same year I first won the Discovery Education/3M Young Scientist Challenge, I received an incomplete (failing) grade in science. Science was my favorite subject, however despite my passion for learning, I had road blocks impeding my success I had to learn how to compensate for. Overcoming organizational and time-management issues was my primary struggle. I would do well on tests and quizzes, but misplaced every piece of homework I was assigned for an entire semester, and struggled to meet deadlines and figure out how to organize my life and my learning. This led to discouragement, self-doubt, and anxiety, and I feel for all students who struggle with these issues. Gradually, I became aware of my own shortcomings and strengths, and figured out what worked for me and what did not. I truly believe that everyone is capable of brilliance, sometimes we all need help figuring out a system that works for us and that allows us to reach our full potential as learners.
