My past clients have ranged from elementary school children to older adults looking to learn English from scratch, whether for recreational or professional needs. In the 10 years I have been tutoring, I have found that catering each lesson to every clients' needs, whether that means games for younger children or off-textbook exercises for older students that fits how they love to learn. During my time in Vancouver, I independently tutored mostly elementary and early middle school children, both individually and in small groups, in the Chinese community who needed supplementary help in English, which included sessions that focused on reading and writing. Given the age group of my clients at the time and their situation (English was often the second language in the household), I frequently designed interactive games and activities that would stress not only repetition of vocabulary and concepts, but a more thorough understanding of how the English language is constructed. My clients saw marked improvements not only in the classroom, but also their ability to connect with their peers (keep in mind, this was a very immigrant-heavy community). In college, which I attended at the University of Chicago, I moved on to a more varied and older clientele that drove me to expand my subject offerings. While I continued to teach reading and writing, most of my clients were high school students. This meant that most of my sessions also had a built-in literature focus as well, given that many of my students who had a strong understanding of the English language, but needed assistance in breaking down more complex and abstract concepts. I quickly found that many of my students lacked much of the historical context, especially, to help them take literary devices (such as symbolism and personification, for example) beyond a technical standpoint so that they may identify how small details define history's most famous works. As a result, much of my lessons focused on thoroughly breaking down and discussing history, be it American, English, French, Spanish, or Latin American history, in order to bolster my students' understanding of the significance what they were reading. Post-college when I moved to New York, I focused primarily on my news career. But after a year of settling down after I moved to the city in 2014, I volunteered with organizations such as New York Cares, which partners with many public schools in the area. Therefore, the vast majority of my tutoring work was done at public schools, often with students from immigrant families that spoke mostly Spanish or Mandarin. While many of them had assigned textbooks and exercises, I would thoroughly sit down with each of them and break down these questions and exercises even further to make sure that the students had a strong understanding of grammar, sentence structure, and sentence devices. I believe that it is simply not enough for a student to understand how to complete an exercise, and therefore have developed a very question-heavy approach that guides and challenges students to come to an answer on their own.
