Experience

I am employed as a writing fellow at Columbia University's Writing Center--one of three undergraduates to work in this program. I provide hour long consultations with writers that attend Columbia, and work with them on writing in all forms, from graduate school applications to creative writing pieces. I follow a philosophy of non-evaluative, non-directorial tutoring that allows students to maintain ownership over their work and gives them opportunities for learning transfer. I try to stay up-to-date on pedagogical research, specifically involving the zone of proximal development for young writers. I recently took a course called How Writers Think that delved deep into the pedagogy surrounding the practice of writing and talked about how to teach writing in order to make it fun and approachable. I also worked in an adult GRE test-prep program that offered free classes to the Morningside Heights community, where I adapted these pedagogical skills to adults with non-traditional educational backgrounds. I am bi-literate in Spanish, which also allows me to communicate very well with English language learners in consultations and tutoring sessions. I have been on the Dean's List at Columbia for every semester I have attended, and also attend tutoring sessions on campus with my colleagues regularly so I can continue to grow and expand my skills.

Hobbies

In my free time I am very involved in the theatre community at Columbia. I am an active member of the Shakespeare troupe, and have both acted in and directed productions on campus. Furthermore, I am a member of Columbia University EcoReps, which is the student-run sustainability initiative on campus. I love learning about Shakespeare and theatre in general, and exploring New York City. I also work on archaeological excavations! I have worked on an excavation team in New Mexico with the director of the Archaeology department at Barnard College, working on intersects between Native American and Spanish colonial material in the 18th century. I love working in interdisciplinary fields overall, and believe that this shows through in my tutoring, allowing me to bring in examples from different fields and work with each student's individual learning style to make the material understandable.
