Gregory J.

Private tutor in New York, NY

Education

I am a senior at the BA/MA program of CUNY Hunter College with a 3.8 major-GPA.

Experience

I have experience tutoring lowerclassmen all my years through high school and college and volunteering as a tutor of various courses at refugee centers. I come from a family of educators and have a particular appreciation for the value of a good teacher. My personal experience with private tutors has shown me that there is little positive correlation between a long list of vaguely descriptive credentials and actual competence, which means that knowledge of algebra or trigonometry or any other topic does not equal ability to share that knowledge with others. The tutors who have been most successful in piquing my curiosity for the subject have been deeply knowledgeable, but most importantly have managed to instill part of their knowledge in me by being humorous, enthusiastic and interesting. Inasmuch as I have the talent and patience, I try to teach in the same manner. Thus, my goal in tutoring is to combine my theoretical knowledge of the subject with my practical knowledge of the technicalities of the academic world. It is important to enable the student to succeed in their standardized tests, to guide them through the characteristic peculiarities of the educational institution they attend or aim to attend and to perform well in the evaluations required of them. But indispensable for this success is the nurturing of a genuine curiosity for the subject. The universe of mathematics is an immense, intricately interconnected and ever-expanding structure of eternal significance. It can be extraordinary, bizarre and beautiful but also overwhelming, and a lesson can either be an exciting exploration of this awe-inspiring edifice or a painfully boring and stifling enumeration of endless logical implications. I will try my very best to achieve the former, and with the help of my students we can both avoid the latter!
