Experience

I graduated with my MPhil and PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University in 2010 and my BA in Biochemistry summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 2004. Since I was in high school, I’ve loved tutoring both kids and adults in a variety of settings. I started out as a tutor at my local community college as well as at the Special Education Department of Congers High School in Rockland County. Later, I went on to teach classes at Yale as a Teaching Assistant where I won my department’s Excellence in Teaching Award. While at Yale, I also worked as a Graduate Writing Tutor to help students iron out kinks in their papers for class as well as for publication. Finally, I’ve mentored both high school and undergraduate students in the laboratory both at Yale and at The Rockefeller University where I’m currently a postdoctoral fellow. My specialty is the natural sciences. Specifically, I am well-versed in mathematics, chemistry, and biology. I also have an extensive degree of experience writing papers and grants for publication as well as editing theses and dissertations. I routinely provide these services and can guide my students through the process of writing: not just grammar and vocabulary, but techniques for battling procrastination as well. My teaching philosophy centers on three points: clarity, excitement, and patience. If something isn’t clear, then there’s no way the student will understand it. If it’s not exciting, then it won’t leave a lasting impression and the student will be quick to forget about it. If the tutor isn’t patient, then the student will become frustrated and not want to be there anymore. I present material clearly by putting things in context and sometimes by using props or stories. I make topics exciting by being funny and sharing anecdotes as well as by showing the student why the concepts we’re talking about are useful every day. I take the time to make sure that I tailor my explanations to the frame of reference of each student because everyone learns differently. I am happy to accommodate scheduling changes assuming I’m notified 24-hours in advance. My schedule is reasonably flexible so holding makeup sessions is not a problem for me. I’m also willing to schedule a free consultation with you over Skype, Google, or Facetime so you can get a feel for my teaching style. Feedback is very welcome and I will do everything I can to optimize the learning experience for my students. I’m based in Astoria, Queens and happy to travel to surrounding neighborhoods and to Manhattan / Brooklyn. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you’d like to know more or setup an appointment.
