Experience
As a former homeschooler who began traditional school just before high school, I have always been interested in the different ways we come to learn, an interest I expanded through the three years I spent tutoring writing across the disciplines as part of New York University’s Expository Writing Program. Because my own education began in a largely self-directed way, I am a firm believer in the importance of fostering students’ curiosity and confidence, and the tutor’s own curiosity—about the student, about the student’s own work, and about the topic of instruction—in the one-on-one environment of a tutoring session is an incredibly useful tool. While depending on a particular student’s needs there are certainly moments for more directive instruction, I’ve found asking questions and really listening to students’ answers to be essential. Tutoring then hands some degree of authority back to the student, and the tutoring session becomes more of a collaboration and a conversation than a lecture, so that the student and tutor are embarking on a process of discovery together and students feel less frustrated, and more capable. While the majority of my recent tutoring experience has come from tutoring writing at the undergraduate level, I also have experience tutoring middle school and high school students in math as well as writing and study skills. Given my own background in psychology (I currently work part-time in New York University's Social Perception, Action, and Motivation Lab), I'd also love to tutor in that discipline as well. Regardless of discipline, it’s a remarkable experience to watch students discover their own capability, and I love being a part of that process.

Hobbies
While I love books and work in book publishing so spend a lot of time reading, I also love being active and outdoors, and especially enjoy hiking outside the city and doing yoga. I'm also a huge fan of cooking and baking, and spend lots of time exploring new (vegetarian) recipes and trying new restaurants.
