Education

The Spence School, class of 1990 Northwestern University, B.A. in English Literature and Fiction Writing (English Major in Writing), 1994 The New School, dual M.F.A. in Fiction & Non-Fiction Writing, 2002

Experience

-Private tutor in English, literature, SAT prep, undergraduate and graduate level writing, English as a second language, creative and expository writing, personal essay, reading comprehension/homework helper Current: references available, 2010-present Former students include a fourth grader, eighth grader, high school juniors and seniors, non-native English speaking graduate students, prep school, undergraduate and graduate school applicants/students and professionals needing to brush up on their writing -Tutor at non-profit 826NYC, 1999-2004: I was a homework helper to a diverse group, with an emphasis on reading comprehension, writing assignments, and at the high school level, literature and essay writing. At 826NYC we reward students for finishing their homework by offering writing prompts and guiding them as they write books generated by these prompts that are bound and include an author's photo. These children are ultimately able to hold in their hands tangible proof of their talents. Writing as its' own reward is a lesson I continue to take joy in sharing with students in private sessions. -Story Analyst for Movie Production Companies (New Line/Picture House/Fine Line, Jersey Films, Fox 2000, Scott Rudin), 1998-2004: By summarizing, analyzing & offering recommendations on books to acquisition departments and heads of production, I expanded on and honed skills (in critiquing fiction and non-fiction stories) first cultivated in undergraduate and graduate school writing workshops. -Published Stories and Essays, Writing Awards: from the Mississippi Review to Writer's Digest to the New York Times. I'm currently at work on my first novel, Steal Back the Stars. Pushing myself as a writer benefits my students. I empathize with the challenge of expressing thoughts cogently. -Editorial Assistant, Vanity Fair Magazine, 1994-1998: Working in an unpredictable, high stress environment prepared me for almost anything a student might throw my way.

Hobbies

Freelance Photographer: my pictures appear regularly in several publications (The New York Times, The New York Observer, Time Out New York) and on many websites (Gothamist, Racked, Eater, Curbed). In 2011 my photographs were exhibited at the Terrain Gallery's show, "This Great, Diverse City: How Should We See It?" in Soho. I was recently interviewed on The Candid Frame podcast and by Inspired Eye, and was featured on the cover of the Street Photographer Notebook. I am looking forward to my first solo gallery show in April, 2016.
