Jefferson H.
Private tutor in New York, NY
Education
I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at Stony Brook University. Twelve years experience teaching history, writing, and journalism at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I hold BA and MA degrees from Binghamton University, and will complete the Ph.D. in May 2013.
Experience
In addition to having taught a wide range of courses to undergraduate and graduate students, I have also completed three graduate courses in history and writing pedagogy. I would like to tutor high school and undergraduate students to provide them the one-on-one training and review that is often difficult to find in large classroom settings and that is crucial to their success as writers, scholars, and intellectuals. I have received awards from Stony Brook University recognizing my teaching in history. I have also presented original research at international history conferences and am working on publishing portions of my dissertation in academic journals.

Hobbies
In general, I would describe myself as friendly, kind, down-to-earth, and welcoming, and these traits come out in my teaching. Listening, understanding, and working through questions and problems with students is as important to me as conveying information and making students understand. I see my students as colleagues in the pursuit of intellectual and scholarly fulfillment, and while my goal is to educate (and in this case, tutor), I approach the task of teaching as a collaborative effort among students and their teacher. Creating a welcoming environment, I believe, is conducive to the critical analysis and thoughtfulness that is so important to writing and thinking about history.
